Los Angeles cops uncover $500K in stolen catalytic converters

Four suspects were busted after Baldwin Park police uncovered a staggering $500,000-plus cache of stolen catalytic converters in a massive Norwalk takedown, capping a months-long probe launched amid a surge in thefts across Los Angeles.

The detectives investigating the case noted that neighboring cities have seen a “similar and significant rise in catalytic converter thefts,” according to the department, KTLA reported.

The suspects included three men and one woman, as seen in photos shared by the police department.

A catalytic converter is a car exhaust device that turns harmful pollutants into less harmful gases. Catalytic converters, worth hundreds to over a thousand dollars for the precious metals they contain, are stolen because they are one of the easier car parts to remove and sell.

Leveraging shared intelligence and resources across local sheriff’s and police departments, investigators pinpointed two critical sites: A South Los Angeles location where stolen catalytic converters were being bought, and a secondary storage facility in Norwalk, where authorities seized approximately 1,800 suspected stolen converters — each replacement typically costing victims between $1,500 and $2,000.

“This investigation remains active, and additional arrests are anticipated,” police said.

The departments that spent months investigating the matter included Arcadia Police Department, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (Chino Hills Station), Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (Century and Norwalk stations), Chino Police Department, Montclair Police Department, Azusa Police Department, and West Covina Police Department.
