Sydney Sweeney’s ‘The Housemaid’s Secret’ Gets $70M Budget And 2027 December Date

If you thought the first The Housemaid was a wild ride, buckle up. Lionsgate is going all-in on The Housemaid’s Secret, reportedly doubling the original film’s budget to a staggering $70 to $80 million for the sequel, and the early details are already painting a picture of a bigger, bolder, and even more deliciously unhinged follow-up.

Sydney Sweeney is back at the center of it all, returning to star and produce the film, which is officially set to hit U.S. theaters on December 17, 2027. Joining her this time is the incredible Kirsten Dunst, a casting choice that should have fans losing their minds in the best way possible. Italian heartthrob Michele Morrone rounds out the confirmed lineup, and production is actively seeking two additional male roles to complete the ensemble. Filming is expected to begin before the end of the year, with Paul Feig back in the director’s chair.

But perhaps the most intriguing piece of the puzzle is what could happen with Amanda Seyfried. Her character technically doesn’t appear in the second book, but Seyfried has made no secret of the fact that she would love to return to the franchise. According to insiders, a small cameo could be in the cards. Fingers crossed, because her presence in the first film was genuinely unforgettable.

Lionsgate International President Helen Lee-Kim offered a tantalizing tease of what’s to come, noting that the story is an expansion of the world established in the first film. She described the second book as even twistier and promised the movie will be more unexpected and structured differently from its predecessor. That kind of creative ambition, paired with this cast, is already a recipe for something special.

The confidence is well-earned. The Housemaid pulled in an impressive $399 million worldwide, and Lionsgate is hoping The Housemaid’s Secret lands somewhere in the $400 to $500 million-plus range. Given Sweeney’s recent track record, that goal looks entirely within reach. Her star-making turn in Anyone But You proved she could carry a romantic comedy to box office gold, and her work as Cassie in the latest season of Euphoria, alongside Zendaya’s Rue, has kept her firmly at the center of pop culture conversation well into 2026.

Sweeney is currently in Australia promoting the Netflix film Gundam, but plans to shift her focus to The Housemaid’s Secret press circuit later this year. The woman does not slow down.

With a powerhouse budget, an electric cast, and a story that promises to out-twist the original, The Housemaid’s Secret is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2027. Mark your calendars.
