Alysa Liu Shares Beauty Staples and DIY Approach to Competition Glam

Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu detailed her go-to makeup products and how she takes getting ready into her own hands for competitions.

The Olympic gold medalist, 20, gushed about which Rare Beauty gems are her favorites while chatting with Popsugar in a TikTok clip posted on Tuesday, February 24. “I do use a lot of Rare Beauty products,” she said of Selena Gomez’s brand, which she went viral for using at the 2026 Winter Olympics held in Milan, Italy.

“If I only had to only choose one, it would probably be the Gel Liner,” Liu said.

When asked if she and other skaters had “their own glam teams” for competitions, Liu hilariously replied, “Hell no! We do it all ourselves.”

When it comes to her DIY routine, Liu explained that “before every competition,” she loves “doing an everything shower.”

“Gotta use the Moisture Glide Venus Razor, can’t forget that,” she said. “Obviously, get made up, makeup, hair and a good night’s sleep the night before.”

Fans went wild over Liu’s makeup preferences in the comments section.

“Selena please make her an ambassador or hire her to do some ads!!” one wrote, while another added, “Rare Beauty better sponsor her!” A third follower also commented, “ALYSSA FOR RARE BEAUTY PLEASEEEEEEEEE.”

Liu’s revelations came after she went viral for using Rare Beauty’s Tinted Lip Oil Stain in the Muted Berry shade while winning gold during her free skate on February 19. (Prior to that, she won gold in the team event alongside Amber Glenn, Ilia Malinin, Ellie Kam, Daniel O’Shea, Madison Chock and Evan Bates on February 8.)

Moments before walking towards the podium, Liu could be heard saying, “Where’s my lipstick?” She then grabbed her lip oil and swiped it across her pout ahead of her picture-perfect moment.

Gomez, 33, reacted to the skater wearing her gloss on February 20. She reposted the clip of Liu and wrote, “Congratulations @alysaxliu,” alongside a heart-hand emoji. “(She’s just like me fr),” the singer added.

This isn’t the first time Liu has been candid about her beauty. Earlier this month, she explained the meaning behind her brunette-and-blonde striped hair.

“I just wanted to be a tree,” she told Paralympian Haven Shepherd in a TikTok interview. “Three years ago, I put my first [bleached band] and I thought, ‘Oh, next year, wintertime … I’m going to do the second one,’ so I did.” When Shepherd, 22, called her a “DIY girl,” Liu revealed that at first created the stripes herself. “To get this light, I had to go to a salon,” Liu added. “I couldn’t lift my hair like this. It lifted good, not good enough. So, I went to a salon and she redid the other stripes just so it would match.”

Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu’s signature striped hairstyle may have brought Team USA good luck at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina. She further explained to NBC News, “So this [top band] I did at the end of 2023, then did another one in 2024 and 2025.” Liu added that at first, she “bleached it” herself and ended with a “gingery” result. Now, she sees colorist Kelsey Miller in St. Louis to get her designer “light” look.

Miller also told Allure in February 2026 that it took “five hours” to create Liu’s “milk tea” look. “I specialize in dimensional hair color, redheads, and extensions,” Miller explained. “It was fun to shake it up and do something I don’t typically do.”
